Following Route 66

Quick update....
The 6 of us left Tulsa this morning, joined by Jack at the petrol station following exit 211. We had a great ride, with at least 5 u-turns compliments of the GPS and Jack trying to find us coffee at around 11am - and then getting onto and following the original Route 66. We all arrived in Amarillo mid afternoon, had an absolutely fabulous tea and have now returned to our rooms. As it is after 11pm I will add to this tomorrow night and add pictures then.

continuing .... it was great that Jack knew about the orginal Route 66, which meant we all rode down it, along cracked cement roads and thru avenues of trees. Really lovely. We saw a number of delapitated and destroyed homes & buildings, it would be interesting to know the history & stories behind them.

We then visited a quaint little town called Sayer, got petrol and filled the bellies. This was where we did most of the u-turns - the guys are getting very good at doing them.

Once done we were back on the main highway towards Amarillo, Texas. We arrived in Amarillo mid afternoon, and decided to head out to have tea at The Big Texan Steak Ranch. This included a free limo ride to and from the place, and their offer of a free 72oz steak with all the trimmings IF eaten in 1 hr. No way in the world!

  1. Hey Ken and Christine,

Thanks to John I found you. Hope you guys are having as much fun as it sounds you are - I'm jealous! Could you clue a newbie like me in on the significance of a u-turn? Not long until you get to the Grand Canyon. Enjoy it mate - it's fantastic!

  2. Hi there,

Time for a quick catch-up, and yu've been having fun. Great about the award, how special is that!! Lovely photo. The legendary Route 66, looking forward to hearing more.

Enjoying the food hey? I rmember feeling like that, or rather like needing a trailer to haul me out of thr restaurants! ANd even nicer when it's cooked by someone else.
Freezing here at the moment, well, pretty cold, 4 degrees C when I got the paper this morning. Bit nippy. Nice days presently, rain on the way. Shall not complain.
    Keep well, ride safely!

    Love,
    Sheryl

  3. Hi Marc,

Just to explain the U-Turns. We AWRA members have an unfortunate capacity for getting occasionally temporarily misplaced on our rides. It has happened so often that we feel a ride is not complete unless it has an unintentional U-turn included. it's a running joke in the club.

    Cheers
